Let me introduce myself: ilsommelier is an idea of
Stefano Ciavatta, member
since 1993 of the
Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS) and of the Association de la Sommelerie
Internationale, that includes the 20 national associations.
AIS is the only organization of its kind that has received a juridical recognition by
the Italian State.
I'm from Italy and that's why most part of the site is about Italian wines, even though
most topics are valid worldwide; by the way, this is also the reason why you could come
across some mistakes: I have tried my best in writing these English pages,
believe me, but... So if you find an error, please let me know.
The typical tasks of a Sommelier include the cellar mamagement, wine tasting and
evaluation, and how to combine them with the most appropriate gastronomical preparations.
To do that you have to have a wide preparation that starts from the knowledge of vines
and the way they are grown and, going through the wine-making and wine-aging techniques,
arrives to the ability of evaluating a wine with competence, in all its aspects.
I strongly believe that wine is not a mystical subject understood by only a few
people and shouldn't be approached with fear: it's up to you to decide whether a wine is good,
since it is for your personal pleasure. Experts' judgment is secondary.
One goal of mine, perhaps the main one, with setting up this site is to provide you with all
the knowledge, easily presented, that allows you to understand why you
like a certain wine but you don't another one. This will allow you to
order or purchase wine on every occasion, sure of the result (and to
your friends' envy).
All activities organized by ilsommelier are backed by years of studies
and experiences "on the field" and are intended for everyone, really.
